United Kingdom is seeking to attract artificial intelligence firm Anthropic to expand its operations, leveraging tensions between the company and the US Department of Defense.
The British government is reportedly considering proposals that include expanding Anthropic’s London presence and potentially facilitating a dual stock market listing. The initiative is being coordinated by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, with backing from Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The move comes after the U.S. government designated Anthropic a national security supply-chain risk, following the company’s refusal to allow its AI chatbot Claude to be used for military surveillance or autonomous weapons applications.
A U.S. court has temporarily blocked the blacklisting, and Anthropic is pursuing further legal action over the designation.
For the UK, the situation presents an opportunity to position itself as a more favorable regulatory and operational environment for AI companies, particularly those navigating geopolitical and ethical tensions around defense applications.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is expected to visit the UK in May, where discussions around potential expansion are likely to take place.
The development highlights intensifying global competition not only for AI technology leadership, but also for attracting top AI firms and talent.
