Windows 11 File Explorer Update Restores Classic Menu Features

Windows 11 is preparing several usability improvements for File Explorer, including more readable file size displays and the return of previously removed right-click menu options.

The upcoming changes are currently being tested in preview builds and are expected to roll out more broadly in the coming weeks.

Microsoft Bringing Back “Refresh” and “Print” Options

Microsoft is restoring some long-requested entries to the modern Windows 11 context menu after criticism surrounding the redesigned right-click interface introduced during the operating system’s launch period.

According to reports, the “Refresh” option is returning directly to the standard File Explorer context menu instead of remaining hidden behind the legacy “Show more options” submenu.

The “Print” command is also reportedly being restored to the primary right-click interface for supported file types, eliminating the need to open the older compatibility menu.

The move reflects Microsoft’s gradual effort to balance the streamlined Windows 11 design with long-standing desktop workflows familiar to traditional Windows users.

File Sizes Will Become Easier to Read

Another major improvement focuses on how File Explorer displays file sizes.

Previously, Windows often displayed large files entirely in kilobytes, resulting in difficult-to-read figures such as multi-million KB values for gigabyte-sized files.

Under the updated system, File Explorer will now automatically display larger files in megabytes or gigabytes when appropriate, while smaller files will continue using kilobytes.

The adjustment is designed to improve readability and make storage information easier to interpret at a glance.

Microsoft Also Working on Faster Context Menus

Reports indicate Microsoft is continuing broader optimization efforts for the Windows 11 right-click experience beyond the currently visible changes.

The company is reportedly exploring additional improvements intended to simplify and accelerate context menu performance in future Windows releases.

The updates are currently available in Windows 11 preview build 26300.8376, with wider public rollout expected after testing is completed through the Windows Insider program.

The changes represent another example of Microsoft gradually refining Windows 11 based on ongoing user feedback surrounding File Explorer and core desktop usability features.
