Nvidia has reportedly reduced the size of its planned financial guarantee for OpenAI’s proposed Ohio data center project, cutting its initial commitment to less than $120 billion from the roughly $250 billion previously discussed.
The revised plan would see Nvidia provide a financial backstop only for the first phase of the project, with the chipmaker and OpenAI said to be close to reaching an agreement.
The change reportedly follows investor concerns over Nvidia’s exposure to increasingly large AI infrastructure financing commitments. Earlier this week, the company also partnered with major financial institutions on platforms designed to attract more than $500 billion in third-party capital for AI infrastructure.
OpenAI is still discussing a binding lease for the full 10-gigawatt Ohio project, which is being developed by SoftBank subsidiary SB Energy. If completed, it could become the largest data center project announced to date.
The facility is central to OpenAI’s broader effort to secure greater control over its computing infrastructure. However, the scale of its commitments continues to attract scrutiny because the company remains unprofitable despite its high private-market valuation.
