While 4GB of RAM might seem modest for modern PCs and smartphones, it’s quite ample for a compact all-in-one board like the Raspberry Pi. That’s why the Raspberry Pi Foundation is introducing a new 2GB variant of the Raspberry Pi 5, effectively halving the RAM from the previous 4GB model. Priced at just $50, this new version is $10 less than the 4GB variant and $30 cheaper than the 8GB model.

Beyond the RAM reduction, the new Raspberry Pi 5 also incorporates a different Broadcom processor, the BCM2712D0. Although it maintains the same quad-core Cortex A76 processor running at 2.4GHz as the BCM2712C1 found in the pricier models, the D0 version omits certain hardware components that were disabled in the higher-end versions. This strategic design choice not only helps reduce costs but also addresses the issue of rising component prices that have affected the overall cost of the Pi 5.

At $50, this new 2GB model represents an excellent value, especially for hobbyists and those integrating the Pi into small-scale projects. The updated Raspberry Pi 5 is available for purchase on PiShop.us and is expected to be stocked by other retailers soon.
