Less than a month ago, OpenAI launched its ChatGPT app for Windows, giving users a convenient way to access the AI directly on their desktop without needing a browser. However, this early release was limited to paid subscribers, leaving free users without access.

Thankfully, there’s an alternative solution: using ChatGPT within Windows Terminal’s nightly (or Canary) build. Windows Terminal, developed by Microsoft, is a powerful command-line app that blends ease of use from Command Prompt with advanced features from PowerShell, but in a more streamlined package. While the standard Windows Terminal app is available through the Microsoft Store, you’ll need the nightly version to access new integrations for ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot.

To download the nightly build, visit the GitHub project page, scroll to “Installing Windows Terminal Canary,” and choose the download that fits your needs. The App Installer version, which auto-updates, is for Windows 11 only, while the Portable ZIP version works on Windows 10 and up but requires manual updates.

After installation, activate the “Terminal Chat” feature in the settings menu and add your API key from OpenAI, GitHub, or Azure to start using ChatGPT. With ChatGPT now integrated into Windows Terminal Canary, you can ask questions, like how to create a directory in PowerShell, or request sample code for a project—no premium plan needed.
