Apple Delays Robot Vacuum Integration with HomeKit, Now Expected in Early 2025

Apple’s long-awaited integration of robot vacuum support into HomeKit has encountered a delay. A recent update to the product page for Apple Home reveals that the feature, which was originally expected to launch alongside the upcoming iOS 18.2 release in December 2024, has now been pushed back to “early 2025.” While Apple announced robot vacuum compatibility during its annual developer conference in June, the precise reasons for the delay remain unclear.

This setback is particularly notable because many smart home users were hoping to finally control their robot vacuums using Siri and the Home app as soon as this year. Once implemented, the feature would allow users to issue voice commands like “Hey Siri, start cleaning the kitchen” or adjust the vacuum’s settings through HomeKit automations. Users would also be able to monitor their vacuum’s battery status and cleaning mode.

The delay may also align with the release of Apple’s rumored “command center” device—a HomePod with a built-in touchscreen that would serve as a central hub for controlling smart home devices. This potential new product could give users an intuitive way to start and monitor their cleaning jobs with just a tap on the screen. Once robot vacuums are compatible with HomeKit, Apple users will have a seamless integration across Matter-compliant devices, as the Matter standard already supports a range of robot vacuums.

Although this pushback is disappointing for those eagerly awaiting HomeKit’s expanded capabilities, 2025 could prove to be a major year for Apple’s smart home ecosystem, with additional updates and device announcements expected to strengthen its position in the market.
