It’s no surprise that internet usage continues to grow worldwide, but new data from Cloudflare highlights just how much online activity surged in 2024. According to the company’s statistics, global internet traffic increased by a significant 17.2% year-over-year, with notable spikes in the final quarter. However, this growth hasn’t been evenly spread across the globe. In some regions, like Guinea, internet traffic soared by an astonishing 350%, showcasing the rapid adoption of internet connectivity in developing areas.

Cloudflare’s 2024 Year in Review also sheds light on how we’re using the web. Familiar giants like Google and Chrome continue to dominate as the top search engine and browser, respectively. Meanwhile, WhatsApp retained its position as the most-used communication app, with Facebook holding firm as the leading social media platform.

The report also uncovers fascinating trends:

  • 225 major internet disruptions occurred globally in 2024.
  • The world’s fastest 10 countries boast average internet speeds of 200Mbps.
  • Mobile devices now account for 41% of all global traffic, underscoring their growing importance.
  • The United States generates over one-third of the planet’s bot traffic.

A standout highlight of the report is the meteoric rise of satellite internet. Starlink, the leading provider, saw its traffic grow by more than 330%, demonstrating the expanding role of satellite-based connectivity in bridging the digital divide.
