Shelly’s New Z-Wave 800 Collection Targets DIYers, Installers, and Commercial Builders
Shelly has unveiled a new collection of Z-Wave 800-powered IoT devices aimed at a broad audience, including DIYers, installers, and commercial builders. The new products feature a variety of smart home devices, such as a smart plug, in-wall dimmers, relays, and sensors. These devices leverage Z-Wave 800 chips (also known as Z-Wave Long Range or LR), which offer impressive capabilities, including extended range—up to one mile in a line of sight—and exceptional energy efficiency, with battery life lasting up to 10 years.
Leon Kralj, Shelly’s CTO, highlighted the game-changing nature of these chips, stating, “Shelly is helping break down smart home connectivity barriers, empowering homeowners, security installers, and commercial property owners and managers with unmatched range, scalability, and energy efficiency to redefine their automation experience.”
Shelly’s approach to in-wall lighting controls stands out, as it doesn’t require homeowners to completely replace existing devices, unlike alternatives from brands like Leviton or Lutron. Instead, Shelly’s dimmers and relays are designed to be mounted inside the electrical box, hidden behind the existing devices, offering a seamless look without overcrowding walls with extra switches.
Commercial builders will benefit from the scalability of Z-Wave 800-powered devices, capable of supporting up to 4,000 nodes on a single mesh network—20 times the capacity of previous chip generations. Furthermore, Z-Wave LR maintains backward compatibility with older generations, ensuring smooth integration into existing setups.
Shelly plans to release these new Z-Wave 800-powered devices in the first half of 2025, further expanding its smart home ecosystem. In addition, Shelly recently announced SmartThings Certification for nine of its existing Z-Wave products, including power-metering smart plugs and smart switches. While Samsung’s most recent SmartThings hub, the SmartThings Station, no longer supports Z-Wave radio, users can still access Z-Wave support via the SmartThings-powered Aeotec Smart Home Hub.
