Doom in a PDF: The New Frontier for Developers

The world of PDF documents is evolving in unexpected ways, with developers pushing the boundaries of what the format can do. Originally designed in 1992 to allow documents to be presented independently of software, hardware, and operating systems, PDF has always been a practical format — but its complexity is now being embraced by programmers, including those looking to break it.

One developer, a high school student with an interest in programming, ading2210, has taken this to the next level with DoomPDF — a port of the classic Doom game that runs directly within a PDF file. However, to experience this wild concept, you’ll need a PDF reader that supports JavaScript, typically available in Adobe Acrobat and browsers like Chromium.

The developer was inspired by PDFtris, another ambitious PDF project created by Thomas Rinsma. This new innovation is a reminder that PDFs can be far more than just static documents — they can be an interactive playground for developers.
