Google Finally Brings Nest Protect to Google Home App After Years of Waiting
For years, Nest Protect owners have been eagerly asking when their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors would be fully integrated into the Google Home app. The wait is over: Google is rolling out public preview support for Nest Protect devices on the Google Home app, allowing users to manage their detectors from one central place.
This long-awaited move, which is currently Android-only and available via the public preview program, will let Nest Protect owners receive real-time alerts for smoke and carbon monoxide, view crucial device updates (like battery life warnings), and adjust settings and schedules directly from the Google Home interface. It’s a significant step for owners who’ve been juggling two apps—the older Nest app and the Google Home app—to control their devices.
Google initially promised to bring Nest Protect to the Google Home app back in 2020, and while it took a few years, the addition is a welcome one. Nest Protect, which debuted over a decade ago in 2013, has remained tied to the old Nest app ever since, even as other Nest devices made the move to the Google Home app over the years. The second-generation model of Nest Protect, released in 2015, has been the oldest Nest product still available for purchase in the Google store.
The addition of Nest Protect to Google Home also comes alongside new support for Matter smart locks, a major development in the smart home space, which was showcased during CES 2025.
While Nest Protect has stood the test of time, it’s remarkable that it still remains a key part of the Nest ecosystem. For many users, the device’s arrival in the Google Home app marks the final step in consolidating all their Google Nest devices under one roof, enhancing convenience and accessibility.
