OpenAI’s Roadmap Update: GPT-4.5 Coming Soon, GPT-5 to Integrate All Models

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has shared a major update on the company’s AI roadmap, confirming a shift in strategy for upcoming models. Instead of releasing the o3 reasoning model as a standalone product, OpenAI is now focusing on a more unified approach with GPT-5.

In a recent social media post, Altman emphasized the company’s goal to simplify AI usage, acknowledging that the current model selection process has become too complex. He stated:

“We want AI to ‘just work’ for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten. We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence.”

As part of this shift, OpenAI will first release GPT-4.5, internally known as Orion, in the coming weeks. This will be the company’s last AI model without chain-of-thought reasoning. Instead of launching o3 separately, OpenAI will integrate it into GPT-5, creating a monolithic system that seamlessly determines which tools and capabilities to use.

Once GPT-5 launches in the next few months, it will serve as a comprehensive AI system that unifies the GPT-series and o-series models. According to Altman, the free tier of ChatGPT will have unlimited access to GPT-5 at its standard intelligence level, while ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers will gain access to higher intelligence tiers with more advanced reasoning capabilities.

This marks a significant shift in OpenAI’s approach, aiming to make AI interactions more seamless and powerful than ever.
