Microsoft brings local AI-powered ‘Describe Image’ feature to Copilot+ PCs
Microsoft is continuing its push into AI-enhanced productivity with a new feature announced in yesterday’s Windows Insider blog post. The feature, called “Describe Image,” is now available to Dev Channel users testing on Copilot+ PCs, offering AI-generated visual interpretation directly within Windows.
Found in the “Click to Do” menu, the Describe Image tool leverages the on-device AI capabilities of Copilot+ systems to generate detailed, contextual descriptions of images, charts, and graphs. This allows users to quickly gain insights from visual content—whether it’s a photo, a complex infographic, or a data-heavy visualization—without needing to interpret every detail themselves.
The first time the feature is launched, Windows sets up the necessary AI models locally. Once configured, the image analysis and generation process occurs entirely on the device, ensuring that no image data or descriptive content leaves the PC. This local processing approach is designed to maintain user privacy and prevent any sensitive visuals from being uploaded to the cloud.
As of now, the Describe Image feature is being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel who are using Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft says that broader availability is on the way, with support for AMD and Intel-based Copilot+ PCs expected soon.
This new addition reflects Microsoft’s broader vision of integrating practical, privacy-focused AI tools into the Windows experience—especially for tasks that go beyond traditional text generation and require more dynamic visual understanding.
