Sony may finally be preparing to take a page out of Microsoft’s playbook with a unified cross-platform purchase system between PC and PlayStation 5. Recent leaks from PlayStation Store assets have revealed a “Cross-Buy” logo combining “PS5/PC,” strongly suggesting that players could soon enjoy the ability to buy a game once and play it across both platforms. This move would mark a significant step forward for Sony’s PC strategy, which has been rapidly expanding over the last few years as more first-party titles make their way to Steam and the Epic Games Store.

While not officially confirmed, this discovery hints at a potential “buy once, play anywhere” model similar to what Xbox players already enjoy through Microsoft’s ecosystem. The logo could even extend to Sony’s growing cloud streaming options, including the PlayStation Portal handheld, though cross-play with Xbox hardware seems highly unlikely. If implemented, it would mark Sony’s most consumer-friendly initiative since the early days of its PS Vita–PS3–PS4 Cross-Buy experiment, which allowed shared ownership of select titles across its console family.

The return of this concept feels timely. With Sony’s recent commitment to simultaneous or near-simultaneous PC releases for major PlayStation exclusives, Cross-Buy could encourage players to stay within Sony’s ecosystem rather than waiting for deep discounts on Steam. For gamers who own both a PS5 and a gaming PC, this could also remove the frustrating dilemma of choosing between the living room convenience of a console and the performance flexibility of a desktop rig.

At a time when $70 games are becoming the industry norm, offering ownership across multiple platforms could go a long way toward building goodwill and giving players more value for their money. If Sony does move forward with Cross-Buy, it could redefine how players think about platform loyalty in the next generation of hybrid gaming experiences.
