A new physiotherapy technique nicknamed “seated salsa” is being hailed as a breakthrough for millions who suffer from chronic lower back pain — and the best part is, you can do it right from your chair.
According to researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University, the gentle, dance-inspired movement helps loosen the stiff lower vertebrae that often cause pain. “Just one minute every half hour can relax the muscles and ease tension,” says physiotherapist Chris McCarthy.
To try it, sit tall with your feet flat and shoulders still. Move one knee forward as you pull the other back, letting your pelvis roll side to side in a slow, rhythmic motion — like dancing salsa while seated.
Studies show this movement helps prevent the “vicious cycle” of immobility and pain caused by muscle spasms. It’s especially useful for office workers and older adults, who spend long periods sitting.
Experts recommend incorporating short, regular movement breaks throughout the day to improve spinal health, posture, and circulation.
Seated salsa may not make you a dancer — but it could be the simplest step toward a stronger, pain-free back.
