France’s Ministry of the Armed Forces has awarded a framework agreement to artificial intelligence company Mistral AI, enabling the use of its AI models, software, and services across a wide range of defense-related bodies, the ministry said on Thursday.
Under the agreement, France’s armed forces, directorates, and services — along with affiliated public entities such as the Atomic Energy Commission, the National Office for Aerospace Studies and Research, and the Navy’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service — will be able to deploy Mistral AI’s technologies for operational and research purposes.
The framework agreement will be overseen by the Ministry Agency for Defense Artificial Intelligence (AMIAD). Mistral AI said its solutions will be deployed on France’s own infrastructure, ensuring full sovereignty over sensitive data and critical technologies. The company added that it will fine-tune its models using defense-specific data to deliver tailored solutions for military and operational needs.
The agreement builds on a cooperation pact announced in March 2025 between Mistral AI and the armed forces ministry, reflecting France’s broader push to strengthen domestic AI capabilities in strategic sectors.
“By integrating the most advanced solutions from Mistral AI, we consolidate our position and prepare the armed forces for future challenges,” said Bertrand Rondepierre, director of AMIAD.
The deal highlights growing interest among European defense institutions in sovereign AI systems, as governments seek greater control over data, infrastructure, and advanced technologies in an increasingly complex security environment.
