Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company could finalize the design of its next-generation AI6 chips as early as December, marking a key step in its push toward advanced artificial intelligence hardware.

The “tape-out” phase represents the point at which a chip design is completed and sent for manufacturing. Tesla’s AI6 chips are expected to power future self-driving vehicles and humanoid robots, central to the company’s long-term strategy.

Samsung Electronics is set to manufacture the chips using its advanced 2-nanometer process, following a multibillion-dollar agreement between the two companies. Production is expected to begin in the second half of 2027.

The development highlights Tesla’s continued investment in custom AI hardware as competition intensifies in autonomous systems and robotics.
