Qualcomm shares surged after reports that OpenAI may be working with Qualcomm and MediaTek on AI-focused smartphone processors for a future consumer device.
According to analyst reports, the project could involve co-developed AI-first mobile chips, with possible mass production around 2028. Taiwan-based manufacturing partners and hardware ecosystem players are also reportedly involved.
Neither company has confirmed the claims, and previous reporting has suggested OpenAI’s planned hardware ambitions may extend beyond traditional smartphones into a broader AI-native device category.
If accurate, the move would signal OpenAI’s deeper push into consumer hardware and could position Qualcomm and MediaTek more aggressively in next-generation AI device infrastructure.
