
Microsoft is expanding its gaming performance efforts with Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR), a Windows-level upscaling feature designed to improve frame rates on handheld gaming PCs.
Built for handheld performance
Devices like the Asus ROG Xbox Ally and handheld gaming PCs powered by AMD chips often struggle to balance performance and battery life.
Auto SR aims to help by automatically rendering games at a lower resolution, then intelligently scaling them up for smoother gameplay.
Microsoft’s answer to DLSS and FSR
Auto SR is positioned as a system-level alternative to:
- Nvidia’s DLSS
- AMD’s FSR
Unlike game-specific implementations, Auto SR operates through Windows itself, potentially enabling support without direct developer integration.
AI-assisted upscaling
Microsoft says Auto SR uses larger AI models and NPUs (Neural Processing Units) to improve image quality while boosting performance.
The feature is especially relevant for devices using chips like the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme, which includes integrated AI hardware.
Early testing begins
Auto SR is currently available in preview through Windows Insider builds.
At launch, support is limited to a small number of games, though Microsoft has not published a full compatibility list.

Microsoft claims up to a 50% frame-rate increase when rendering at 720p and scaling to higher resolutions.
Hardware limitations
Not all handheld devices may benefit equally.
The higher-end Xbox Ally X model includes an NPU capable of accelerating Auto SR, while lower-tier variants may lack the same hardware support.
Promising—but early
Auto SR could become an important feature for Windows-based handheld gaming, especially as portable PCs compete with devices like the Steam Deck.
However, support remains limited, and real-world results will likely vary depending on the game and hardware.
