OpenAI has ushered in a new era of accessibility and customization in AI with the launch of the GPT Store, an app store dedicated to special-purpose AI chatbots built on the foundation of its ChatGPT technology. The store offers a diverse array of GPT custom apps, ranging from AllTrails for personalized trail recommendations to a Khan Academy programming tutor, a Canva design tool, and a book recommender, among others. Subscribers to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus, priced at $20 per month, gain access to the GPTs and can even create their own, regardless of programming expertise.
The GPT Store is envisioned as a hub for promoting and categorizing GPTs, simplifying the process of discovering tailored solutions. Notable examples of available GPTs include a fitness trainer, laundry buddy washing label decoder, music theory instructor, coloring book picture generator, and Pearl for Pets offering vet advice. OpenAI’s business partners and the broader ChatGPT community have collectively contributed to the creation of 3 million GPTs since the technology’s launch in November.
Similar to the concept of Apple’s App Store, the GPT Store features promoted GPTs, top-trending options, and categories spanning Dall-E graphics, writing, productivity, research, programming, education, and lifestyle. The success of the GPT Store holds the potential to redefine AI technology’s approachability, utility, and profitability, solidifying OpenAI’s leadership in the field. While the details of revenue sharing for GPT creators remain unclear, OpenAI aims to begin the process by the end of March, with compensation based on user engagement with GPTs.
