HP Firmware Update Causes LaserJet Printers to Malfunction, Even with Original Toner
HP is once again facing backlash over a firmware update that has rendered some LaserJet printers inoperable, even for users relying on genuine HP toner cartridges. According to Ars Technica, firmware version 20250209, released on March 4, 2025, has caused Error Code 11 and a flashing toner indicator on affected devices. The issue has been confirmed on HP LaserJet MFP M232 to M237 series printers, leaving many users unable to print.
HP’s Explanation and User Complaints
HP’s official release notes for the update mention security enhancements, regulatory compliance updates, and bug fixes, but make no reference to any changes in toner compatibility. However, frustrated users have taken to HP’s support forums, reporting that their printers refuse to recognize HP-branded toner after the update. Despite attempts to clean connectors, reinstall cartridges, and reset the devices, the issue persists, effectively rendering the printers unusable.
HP has acknowledged the issue, stating:
“We are aware of a firmware issue affecting a limited number of HP LaserJet 200 Series devices, and our team is actively working on a solution. For assistance, affected customers can contact our support team at: HP Support.”
HP’s Troubled History with Firmware Issues
This isn’t the first time HP firmware updates have caused major problems for customers. In May 2023, an update led to several HP OfficeJet printers displaying a permanent blue screen, rendering them useless for weeks. Additionally, HP has been criticized for its strict DRM policies, which prevent users from using third-party ink and toner. The company’s subscription-based printing model and always-online printer restrictions have also been widely condemned as anti-consumer.
At this point, HP hasn’t provided an official fix or clarified how many users are affected. Those impacted by the issue may need to wait for a follow-up firmware update or attempt to roll back the previous version—if possible.
