
RealSense, Intel’s long-dormant depth-camera technology, is making a surprising comeback—this time as an independent company. Spun out from Intel with $50 million in funding, the newly reborn RealSense will be led by Nadav Orbach, previously vice president and general manager of Intel’s Incubation and Disruptive Innovation group. This revival marks a strategic pivot toward fast-growing markets in robotics and AI-powered security.
Once a rising name in computer vision, RealSense originally competed with Microsoft’s Kinect around a decade ago, with early ambitions to transform the PC experience. Intel managed to license the technology to third parties like Creative, and the platform briefly gained traction with features like Windows Hello in Windows 10. But RealSense struggled to find sustainable success in the consumer PC space and eventually faded into Intel’s background. Instead of dissolving the division, Intel repurposed its depth-sensing tech for robotics and industrial applications—an area where the technology quietly gained momentum.
Now independent, RealSense says it aims to capitalize on the growing demand for humanoid and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), as well as AI-enhanced access control systems. In fact, the company claims its depth cameras are currently embedded in 60% of all AMRs and humanoid robots globally. It also plans to continue supporting its existing product roadmap, including the new D555 depth camera, which leverages RealSense’s next-gen Vision SoC V5 and includes Power over Ethernet (PoE) for easier integration in edge AI environments.
While Intel is focusing on financial restructuring—cutting costs, laying off staff, and reshaping its foundry strategy—RealSense appears set to chart its own course in the growing field of embedded vision. With a clear direction and new leadership, the company is poised to carve out a deeper role in AI and robotics as those markets accelerate.
