Vietnamese leaders have called on Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics to expand investment in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and research as the country seeks to strengthen its position as a regional technology hub.

At a meeting in Hanoi, President To Lam urged Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon to increase investment in areas including AI, semiconductors, robotics, 5G and 6G, data centers and next-generation connectivity.

Amon said Qualcomm wants to develop Vietnam into its third-largest AI research and development hub globally. The company already operates an R&D center in Hanoi and works with local technology groups including Viettel and VinSmart.

Vietnam is increasingly positioning economic growth around science, technology, digital transformation and advanced manufacturing, with policymakers seeking to move the country further up the global technology value chain.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung also met Samsung Electronics CEO Roh Tae-moon, encouraging the South Korean company to continue expanding its role in Vietnam’s industrial and technology development.

Samsung has invested around $24 billion in Vietnam, where it operates one of its most important global manufacturing bases. The Vietnamese government said exports from Samsung’s mobile-phone manufacturing operations in the country have reached $500 billion over 17 years.

Samsung said it plans further investment and workforce training while helping more Vietnamese suppliers participate in its global supply chain.
