Opera 120 Introduces AI-Based Translator, Enhanced Features, and Critical Security Fix

After a period of beta testing, Opera Software has officially rolled out version 120 of its browser to the public. This new release focuses heavily on privacy-centric tools, productivity enhancements, and crucial security fixes—continuing Opera’s strategy of positioning itself as a feature-rich alternative to mainstream browsers like Chrome and Edge.

The highlight of Opera 120 is the introduction of a new built-in AI-powered translation feature that supports over 40 languages. Opera emphasizes that user privacy is a core element of the tool, with no translation data passed on to third-party services. Instead, the translation process is handled entirely on Opera’s own European-based servers in partnership with Lingvanex, a provider of AI-based language translation technology. This design ensures greater control over user data and can appeal to privacy-conscious users seeking alternatives to cloud-based translation tools from big tech providers.

Alongside the Translator, Opera 120 brings a host of interface and usability enhancements. These include an improved password manager for easier and more secure credential management, updates to the Split Screen mode for better multitasking, and refinements to Tab Islands—a feature that helps users organize groups of related tabs visually. There’s also a new floating Miniplayer that lets users watch videos in a compact overlay while browsing, making media consumption more flexible and unobtrusive.

Opera 120 also delivers updates to VPN Pro, the browser’s subscription-based VPN service, which provides an additional layer of encrypted browsing directly within the browser interface. This update may include backend improvements for stability and performance, though Opera hasn’t detailed exact changes.

Critically, the update patches a zero-day vulnerability labeled CVE-2025-6554 in the V8 JavaScript engine, which is used in Chromium-based browsers. While Opera hasn’t elaborated on whether the flaw had been actively exploited, its inclusion in the patch notes underscores the importance of updating as soon as possible. Opera 120 is built on Chromium version 135, ensuring compatibility with the latest web technologies and performance enhancements while benefiting from upstream security patches.
