NordVPN has announced that it will be retiring its Meshnet feature, the company’s secure file-sharing and device-connection tool, on December 1, 2025. Once that date arrives, all Meshnet-related functionality will be disabled, though the change will not affect NordVPN’s core services such as secure browsing, streaming access, and encrypted tunneling. The shutdown marks the end of a feature that was first introduced in 2022 as an innovative way to link multiple devices together with a VPN-protected virtual LAN environment.
Meshnet stood out by offering more than just secure file transfers—it enabled users to connect devices worldwide as if they were on the same local network, making it useful for both practical tasks and recreational activities like hosting private LAN gaming sessions. Despite this versatility, NordVPN admitted in a recent blog post that the feature never reached mainstream adoption. While a small community of loyal users relied on it, the company explained that Meshnet demanded significant resources to maintain, and it has decided to focus those resources on its most widely used tools. NordVPN emphasized that its priority is to improve speed, expand server coverage, and enhance security, areas that benefit the majority of its subscriber base.
As for alternatives, NordVPN recommends that users who relied on Meshnet for file storage and transfer migrate to NordLocker, its secure cloud storage service. While NordLocker requires a separate subscription, it offers both a free 3GB plan and paid tiers ranging from 500GB for $2.99/month to 2TB for $6.99/month. While no other VPN on the market offers the same LAN-like connectivity as Meshnet, NordLocker ensures that encrypted file sharing and storage remain available to customers who valued Meshnet’s secure data handling.
