Microsoft 365 users are gaining a significant boost to their productivity workflows with several new Copilot-powered AI features in OneDrive. The latest update, detailed in a recent Microsoft OneDrive blog post, allows users to summarize the contents of files and documents, ask detailed questions about file contents, compare multiple files side by side, and even generate frequently asked questions (FAQs) automatically from their documents. These additions are designed to save time and make managing large volumes of files far more efficient, especially for professionals who regularly handle reports, presentations, and datasets.
The new file comparison feature works directly in File Explorer, allowing users to select up to five files at a time to quickly identify differences or inconsistencies. Meanwhile, the other AI-powered tools are accessible through OneDrive itself, providing an integrated experience for cloud-based workflows. Copilot currently supports a broad range of file types, including Office documents (DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, XLSX), commonly used formats like PDF, TXT, and RTF, as well as web files (HTML, HTM) and OpenDocument formats (ODT, ODP).
However, the AI capabilities do have limitations. At present, they do not support images, screenshots, videos, or other non-text-based content, which means visual-heavy workflows are not yet fully covered. Still, for document-centric tasks such as analyzing reports, cross-referencing content, or generating quick summaries and FAQs, Copilot’s enhancements provide a notable time-saving advantage. As organizations continue to rely on OneDrive for cloud storage and collaboration, these AI features could become an indispensable part of daily operations.
