Microsoft is rolling out a new AI-powered feature for the Photos app in Windows 11, designed to help users more easily organize the growing number of images stored on their PCs. According to a recent Windows Insiders blog post, Insiders across all channels can now test “Auto-Categorization,” a tool that automatically sorts photos into predefined categories. The feature, however, will only be available on Copilot+ PCs, which means it relies on the advanced AI hardware and software capabilities built into Microsoft’s latest devices.
Auto-Categorization works by analyzing the contents of images and grouping them into “meaningful categories” such as receipts, identity documents, screenshots, and notes. The categorization is powered by on-device AI, so it can recognize relevant details regardless of the language present in the image. If the app makes a mistake, users will have the option to manually correct the categorization themselves. At present, only four categories are supported, and Microsoft has not yet clarified whether more categories will be added in the future or if users will eventually be able to create custom ones.
The new feature is part of Photos version 2025.11090.25001.0 and higher, and it is gradually being rolled out to Windows Insiders running Windows 11 on Copilot+ PCs. While still limited in scope, Auto-Categorization could significantly reduce the time and effort required to manage large collections of digital images. If Microsoft expands the categories and adds customization in future updates, this feature could become a powerful organizational tool for users who depend on their PCs as primary storage for documents, images, and personal archives.
