If you’ve never given PowerToys a try, it’s one of the best-kept secrets for Windows users. The official Microsoft add-on suite adds dozens of powerful features and quality-of-life tools that make the operating system feel more customizable and modern. One of the standout utilities is FancyZones, which lets you take Windows’ built-in snap feature to the next level by creating custom window layouts. And now, PowerToys is set to get even better with a long-awaited addition: the ability to automatically switch between light and dark modes in Windows 11.

According to Niels Laute, Windows Platform Senior Product Manager, the feature will debut in PowerToys version 0.95, which is expected to roll out in October 2025. The update will also bring a redesigned interface for the Keyboard Manager, making it easier to remap keys and shortcuts. While many apps already support automatic light and dark theme switching, Windows 11 itself still lacks the functionality, which has puzzled users given how central the visual themes are to the overall experience. PowerToys is stepping in to close that gap, finally giving users the flexibility they’ve been asking for.

Before that, the current version 0.94 delivers some useful smaller improvements. Most notably, it adds a new search bar that helps you quickly locate individual tools or settings within PowerToys. With more than two dozen modules and hundreds of settings now bundled into the suite, this makes navigation far more efficient. Additional updates include a new shortcut conflict manager to help resolve overlapping hotkeys, as well as enhancements to the Mouse Pointer Crosshairs tool.

PowerToys continues to grow into a must-have companion app for Windows, striking a balance between powerful functionality and user-friendly design. If you want to explore the latest version or prepare for the October release, you can download it directly from Microsoft’s official GitHub page.
