LEGO’s nostalgia-fueled retro gaming sets are already a hit with millennials, but one fan took things to the next level. The official LEGO 1:1 Game Boy model, complete with lenticular swap-out cards for different “games,” has been transformed into a fully playable Game Boy by modder Natalie The Nerd.
Natalie, a well-known Game Boy modder with an online parts and service shop, didn’t just slap on some electronics—she fitted genuine Game Boy hardware inside the LEGO set, making it playable with real cartridges. The exterior remains largely unchanged, including the LEGO brick buttons and faux cartridge slots, though the screen and cartridge area were modified. Custom 3D-printed components handle button functionality, and the power now runs through USB-C, tucked inside a 3D-printed LEGO brick. The backlit LCD screen is another modern upgrade, making this Game Boy a blend of retro nostalgia and contemporary convenience.
Despite the impressive work, the mod is still a work in progress. The prototype may not yet have an internal battery pack, and Natalie plans to release the full plans once everything is finalized. For LEGO fans and modding enthusiasts, this project is shaping up to be a weekend DIY dream.
