Meta is laying off about 600 employees within its Superintelligence Labs unit as part of a strategic overhaul designed to make its AI division more flexible and efficient. The cuts will affect the FAIR research group and teams focused on AI infrastructure and product applications.
Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang said the restructuring will allow faster decision-making and expand the impact of remaining roles. The TBD Lab, responsible for developing Meta’s next-generation AI foundation models, will not be affected. The move comes after Meta reorganized its AI operations in June following high-profile staff departures and criticism of its Llama 4 model.
The company is also bolstering its AI infrastructure through a $27 billion financing deal with Blue Owl Capital to support its largest data center project. Meta’s long-term goal is to strengthen its foundation model capabilities while streamlining operations for faster innovation in artificial intelligence.
