Tesla’s new budget versions of the Model Y and Model 3 are set to face an uphill climb in Europe, where dozens of electric vehicles already undercut their prices. Starting at $39,990 and $36,990, the new trims are far above rivals like Dacia’s Spring (€16,800) and BYD’s Dolphin Surf (€23,000).
Tesla’s share in Europe has fallen to 1.5%, down from when the Model Y was the region’s best-selling car in 2023. Analysts say the company’s aging lineup and Musk’s polarizing reputation have accelerated the decline.
Although Tesla refreshed the Model Y this year, experts warn that the new pricing strategy won’t deliver the breakout success Musk hopes for. “A €30,000 car would change the game — this won’t,” said Matthias Schmidt of Schmidt Automotive.
More than 25 new EVs are expected to launch in Europe next year, including Volkswagen’s ID.Polo, adding further pressure. While the lower price may sustain sales temporarily, analysts doubt it will reclaim lost ground against Chinese rivals like BYD and European budget brands.
