OpenAI is considering developing AI-driven consumer health tools, including a personal health assistant powered by generative AI, as part of its strategy to move beyond its existing ChatGPT products, Business Insider reported.

The initiative follows key hires, such as Nate Gross, cofounder of Doximity, as head of healthcare strategy, and Ashley Alexander, former Instagram executive, as vice president of health products.

At the HLTH 2025 conference, Gross highlighted that ChatGPT draws about 800 million weekly active users, many of whom use the chatbot for medical guidance.

Tech leaders like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have all attempted to bring healthcare-focused digital services to market—with limited success. Google ended its Health Records service in 2011, Amazon shut down Halo in 2023, and Microsoft’s HealthVault struggled to gain traction.

OpenAI’s entry into healthcare could bring AI-powered personal health management into the mainstream, though the company will face challenges around regulatory compliance, data protection, and clinical reliability.
