Britain’s communications regulator has opened an investigation into Meta Platforms over whether the information it supplied about WhatsApp was complete and accurate during a market review. Ofcom said on Friday that concerns emerged following its assessment of the wholesale market for business bulk SMS messages, commonly used for services such as appointment reminders and delivery notifications.

According to the regulator, the available evidence suggests Meta’s response to its information request may not have fully reflected the relevant data related to WhatsApp. The investigation will examine whether Meta complied with its legal obligations to provide accurate and comprehensive information as part of the review process.

Meta said it takes regulatory responsibilities seriously and has devoted significant resources to responding to official information requests. The company added that it would cooperate fully with Ofcom’s investigation. The probe comes amid heightened scrutiny of major technology firms in the UK, as regulators seek to ensure transparency and fair competition in digital communications markets.
