Meta Platforms has begun construction on a $10 billion data center in Indiana as it accelerates efforts to expand computing capacity for artificial intelligence. The facility, located in Lebanon, Indiana, is designed to deliver up to 1 gigawatt of power when fully operational—roughly equivalent to the electricity needs of 800,000 homes.

The project is part of Meta’s broader infrastructure push as major technology firms race to secure computing resources for AI development. The company previously said it plans to invest $600 billion in U.S. infrastructure and jobs over the next three years, with data centers forming a core component of that strategy. Meta’s vice president for data centers said the Indiana facility is expected to come online by late 2027 or early 2028.

Meta stated it has secured agreements with local utilities and is funding necessary energy infrastructure upgrades. The announcement follows other large-scale investments, including a $27 billion financing arrangement with Blue Owl Capital for a Louisiana data center and a separate $1.5 billion project in Texas.

The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has drawn scrutiny from environmental advocates concerned about energy use and grid costs. Meta said it is covering the full upfront investment for the Indiana site, underscoring its commitment to scaling capacity amid intensifying competition in the AI sector.
