Spain has ordered prosecutors to investigate social media platforms X, Meta and TikTok over the alleged spread of AI-generated child sexual abuse material, marking a significant escalation in Europe’s scrutiny of big tech companies.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced the move as part of a broader regulatory push aimed at addressing harmful online content and platform design practices that may expose users to risk. Authorities cited a technical report prepared by three government ministries as the basis for the investigation.
Officials say algorithms must not be allowed to amplify or conceal criminal material. Government spokesperson Elma Saiz stressed that children’s safety, privacy and dignity remain a priority, warning against technological systems that may inadvertently enable exploitation.
The investigation follows growing evidence of AI-generated abuse imagery circulating online. According to figures cited by the government, one in five young people in Spain report having fake explicit images created of them using AI while they were minors.
The move aligns with wider international pressure on digital platforms. Ireland has opened a parallel investigation into X’s Grok chatbot over concerns related to harmful AI-generated imagery and data processing practices.
Spain’s action is part of a broader regulatory package that could also include restrictions on social media use for those under 16. European regulators continue to increase oversight under the Digital Services Act as concerns grow about illegal content and emerging AI misuse.
