Microsoft says it has fixed a Windows 11 Remote Desktop issue that appeared after recent security updates introduced new protections for RDP connections.
Security updates caused display problems
The issue affected systems running the April 2026 Windows updates:
- KB5083769
- KB5082052
These updates included security changes designed to protect against the vulnerability CVE-2026-26151 involving manipulated Remote Desktop files.
RDP warning windows displayed incorrectly
After installing the updates, some users experienced broken or distorted security warning dialogs when opening RDP files.
According to Microsoft, the problem mainly occurred on systems using:
- Multiple monitors
- Different display scaling settings
For example, one display set to 100 percent scaling and another set to 125 percent.
Affected users reported:
- Overlapping text
- Hidden buttons
- Difficult-to-read warning messages
Microsoft releases workaround update
Microsoft says the bug has now been addressed through optional update KB5083631, released on April 30th.
Users who want the fix immediately can install the update manually through Windows Update.
Otherwise, the fix is expected to arrive automatically in a future cumulative update.
Temporary workarounds were provided
Before the patch became available, Microsoft recommended two temporary solutions:
- Use identical scaling settings across all monitors
- Navigate warning dialogs using the keyboard instead of the mouse
The company suggested using:
- Tab to switch between controls
- Spacebar to confirm selections
Additional Windows update concerns remain
The RDP issue is only one of several problems linked to recent Windows updates.
Users and organizations have also reported:
- BitLocker lockouts
- Boot loops on some HP and Dell systems
- Backup software conflicts tied to VSS services
It remains unclear whether all of these issues share a common underlying cause.
Reliability remains under scrutiny
The growing list of update-related bugs comes as Microsoft publicly promises to improve Windows reliability and streamline its update experience.
The company recently announced broader plans to make Windows 11 more stable, responsive, and less disruptive.
