STMicroelectronics is rapidly expanding its role in the growing space technology economy, projecting more than $3 billion in cumulative semiconductor revenue from 2026 through 2028 as demand surges for chips powering low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks.
The Franco-Italian chipmaker’s growth is being driven by the transformation of satellite communications from niche infrastructure into mass-market broadband, direct-to-cell connectivity, and potentially future orbital computing systems. STMicro’s LEO-related revenue has already climbed dramatically over recent years and is expected to approach $1 billion annually by 2026.
A major advantage for STMicro is its long-term relationship with Starlink, where it supplies components for both satellites and user terminals. This partnership has positioned the company as an early leader in a market increasingly shaped by Starlink, Amazon’s satellite ambitions, AST SpaceMobile, and other emerging orbital communications providers.
The company currently holds a dominant market share in certain satellite semiconductor categories and is seeking to preserve that edge as competition intensifies. STMicro also sees China as a major terminal-device opportunity, though export controls limit its access to more strategically sensitive satellite technology markets.
Perhaps most notably, STMicro is already looking beyond communications into orbital data centers — a concept that could eventually merge space infrastructure with AI, cloud computing, and global connectivity. While this future revenue is not yet included in current forecasts, executives openly acknowledge orbital computing as a potentially transformative next frontier.
STMicro’s strategy highlights a broader industrial shift: semiconductors are becoming foundational not just to terrestrial AI and telecom systems, but also to the rapidly emerging commercial space economy. As LEO infrastructure scales globally, chipmakers with early positioning may capture a critical share of what could become a multi-trillion-dollar orbital technology ecosystem.
