Augmental Launches MouthPad, a Tongue-Controlled Mouse for Hands-Free Computing

Augmental has introduced MouthPad, an innovative Bluetooth-powered input device that allows users to control a computer entirely with their tongue. Designed primarily for people with limited hand mobility, the custom-made device transforms tongue movements into mouse controls, offering a hands-free alternative to traditional input devices.

The company says the technology is already being used daily by more than 100 people and could significantly improve computer accessibility.

How MouthPad Works

MouthPad is a custom-fitted oral device worn over the user’s upper teeth.

Embedded within the mouthpiece is a pressure-sensitive touchpad positioned against the roof of the mouth. By moving and pressing their tongue against the touchpad, users can control:

• Mouse cursor movement
• Left and right clicks
• Scrolling

The device also incorporates head tracking, combining tongue input with head movement to deliver more precise cursor control.

All gestures and controls can be customized through a companion application to suit each user’s preferences.

Designed for Accessibility

Augmental describes MouthPad as part of its broader vision of “body-coupled interfaces”—technology that enables people to interact with computers and artificial intelligence without relying on their hands.

The company says the device is already helping more than 100 users with limited mobility perform everyday computing tasks independently.

According to Augmental, one user has achieved cursor precision comparable to that reported for certain implanted brain-computer interface (BCI) systems, despite MouthPad requiring no surgery or invasive procedures.

Custom-Fitted for Every User

Each MouthPad is individually manufactured to fit the user’s teeth.

Before production begins, customers must complete a professional dental scan, which costs approximately $100 in addition to the device itself.

After the scan is submitted, Augmental estimates a production and delivery time of around six months.

Pricing and Availability

MouthPad is currently available only in the United States.

The device is priced at $1,400, with the required dental scan purchased separately.

Despite the premium cost and lengthy production process, demand appears to be strong. Augmental reports a waiting list of more than 6,300 people, including:
