Amazon has been hit with a proposed class-action lawsuit in the United States, with consumers alleging the company misled shoppers by promoting seafood products as “sustainable” and “responsibly sourced” without sufficient evidence.

The complaint argues that labels such as “dolphin safe,” “wild caught,” and “MSC Certified Sustainable Seafood” gave consumers the impression the products had minimal environmental impact. Plaintiffs claim many of these sustainability claims cannot be fully verified due to limited tracking of global fishing vessels and concerns over unsustainable fishing practices.

The lawsuit covers a range of seafood products sold on Amazon, including brands such as Bumble Bee, Chicken of the Sea, StarKist, and 365 by Whole Foods Market.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages and compensation, alleging they would not have purchased the products—or would have paid less—had they known the true sourcing practices. Amazon has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit.
