Apple has reportedly trained a large language model specifically for the Chinese market with support from Alibaba, marking a major shift from its previous strategy of relying mainly on third-party AI models in China.

The move would give Apple greater control over Apple Intelligence as it prepares to launch generative AI features on iPhones and other devices in one of its most important markets. U.S.-based models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are not available in China, making local partnerships essential.

Apple’s China-specific model was developed with Alibaba’s assistance, while Alibaba’s Qwen technology is also expected to play a role in Apple Intelligence across compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro devices.

The development follows regulatory approval from China’s internet authorities, clearing a major hurdle for Apple’s AI rollout. If launched as planned, Apple could become the first foreign company approved to offer its own proprietary generative AI model in China.

The strategy comes as Apple faces stronger competition from domestic smartphone makers such as Huawei, which have moved quickly to integrate AI assistants and other generative features into their devices.

China remains a critical market for Apple, and the lack of advanced AI capabilities on local iPhones has been seen as one factor weighing on sales. A locally trained model could help Apple narrow that gap while staying within China’s regulatory framework.
