South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix is reportedly considering building a major memory chip manufacturing facility in Japan’s Miyagi prefecture, potentially investing tens of trillions of won in the project.
The possible expansion comes as global demand for memory chips continues to rise, driven by artificial intelligence, data centers and high-performance computing.
Miyagi has been designated as one of Japan’s key semiconductor industry hubs, making it an attractive location for companies seeking access to infrastructure, suppliers and government support. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won reportedly visited the region recently as the company evaluates potential investment options.
If approved, the project would become the first large-scale semiconductor manufacturing investment in Japan by a South Korean chipmaker, marking a significant shift in regional semiconductor cooperation.
SK Hynix said no final decision has been made, but added that any location with the necessary infrastructure could be considered as the company expands production capacity.
