Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has called on Chinese companies to shift toward higher-quality, technology-intensive investments in Vietnam, with a greater focus on areas such as artificial intelligence, 5G, semiconductors and big data.
Hung said the next phase of economic cooperation should prioritize the quality and long-term impact of investment rather than simply increasing its total value.
He also encouraged Chinese firms to turn existing agreements into concrete projects in sectors including railways, logistics, clean energy and advanced technology.
The push comes as Vietnam deepens economic ties with China while navigating pressure from the United States and other Western partners over the use of Chinese technology in sensitive areas such as 5G and AI infrastructure.
Vietnam has recently expanded cooperation with companies including Huawei and ZTE for 5G deployment, marking a shift from its earlier alignment with U.S.-backed efforts to limit the use of Chinese telecom equipment.
Chinese investors currently have more than 7,100 projects in Vietnam with registered capital totaling about $37 billion, making China the country’s sixth-largest foreign investor. New Chinese investment commitments rose 31.5% year-on-year in the first seven months of 2026.
Hung said Chinese companies should view Vietnam as a long-term production and business base while bringing more advanced technologies into the country.
