Windows 11 26H2 Expected in October with Focus on Extended Support

Microsoft’s next major Windows 11 feature update, version 26H2, is expected to roll out in October 2026, but users shouldn’t expect a major wave of new features. Instead, the update’s primary purpose is to extend Windows 11’s support lifecycle while enabling improvements that have already been delivered through previous updates.

Like Windows 11 25H2, version 26H2 will be released as a small enablement package, meaning most of its functionality is already present in the operating system and simply needs to be activated.

Expected Release Window

Microsoft has previously confirmed that Windows 11 26H2 will arrive during the second half of 2026 as an enablement package.

Although the rollout could begin in late September, previous Windows 11 releases suggest an October launch is more likely:

  • Windows 11 25H2 began rolling out on September 30
  • Windows 11 24H2 launched in October
  • Windows 11 23H2 also debuted in October

As with previous releases, availability is expected to expand gradually over several weeks.

Few New Features Planned

Unlike previous annual updates, Windows 11 26H2 will introduce relatively few headline features.

Microsoft has already delivered many planned improvements throughout 2026 rather than saving them for the annual release. These include features such as:

  • Point-in-Time Restore
  • Cloud Rebuild
  • Various quality-of-life improvements released through cumulative updates

One notable addition expected in 26H2 is automatic cloud backup for:

  • Windows settings
  • Microsoft Store app lists
  • Selected personal files

The feature will be enabled by default but can be turned off by users.

Support Extension Is the Biggest Benefit

For most users, the main reason to install Windows 11 26H2 will be the extended support period.

According to Microsoft’s support schedule:

Windows VersionSupport Ends
Windows 11 24H2 (Home/Pro)October 13, 2026
Windows 11 25H2October 12, 2027
Windows 11 26H2October 2028

Upgrading to 26H2 ensures another year of security updates and feature improvements.

Tiny Download Thanks to Enablement Package

The upgrade itself is expected to be remarkably small.

Microsoft is reportedly preparing a 174KB enablement package, which simply activates features that have already been installed through earlier Windows updates.

Because the necessary code is already present in Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, installation should be quick and require minimal downtime.

Special Case for Windows 11 26H1

One exception applies to systems running Windows 11 26H1, a specialized branch designed for devices powered by Snapdragon X2 processors or NVIDIA RTX Spark hardware.

Those systems will not upgrade to 26H2.

Instead, Microsoft plans to move them directly to Windows 11 27H2 during the second half of 2027, when the separate development branches are expected to merge.

A Maintenance Release Rather Than a Feature Update

Overall, Windows 11 26H2 appears to be more of a maintenance release than a feature-packed upgrade. Rather than introducing sweeping interface changes or major new capabilities, Microsoft is focusing on stability, incremental improvements, and extending the operating system’s support lifecycle through 2028.
