Windows Insiders Must Update Secure Boot Certificates Before August 11
Microsoft has announced that Windows Insider Program participants will soon need to update their Secure Boot certificates to continue receiving preview builds. The change is part of a routine certificate renewal ahead of the expiration of the current certificates on August 11, 2026.
Certificate Renewal Required
Windows Insider Preview builds are digitally signed using special flight certificates that verify the authenticity of preview releases and help ensure devices remain on supported Insider versions of Windows.
According to Microsoft, the current certificates expire on August 11, 2026, prompting the company to issue new Insider builds containing refreshed certificates.
Microsoft emphasized that this is planned maintenance and not a response to a security vulnerability.
More Insider Channels Affected
Previous certificate renewals primarily impacted users in the Canary Channel. This time, however, Microsoft says the changes affect a broader range of Insider participants.
Because of updates to the signing process, the new certificate requirements now apply to multiple Windows Insider channels, including:
- Canary
- Beta
- Experimental
The minimum build required to receive the updated certificates varies depending on the Insider channel and Windows 11 version being used.
How to Update
Updating the certificates is straightforward. Windows Insider users simply need to install the latest available Insider build through Windows Update, which includes the renewed Secure Boot certificates.
What Happens If You Don’t Update?
Users who fail to install the updated certificates before August 11, 2026 will no longer receive new Windows Insider Preview builds after the existing certificates expire.
To avoid interruptions in preview updates, Microsoft recommends installing the latest Insider build before the deadline.
