Microsoft 365 Apps Will Lose New Features on Windows 10

Microsoft is increasing pressure on Windows 10 users by winding down feature support for Microsoft 365 Apps, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. After version 2608 is released, Microsoft 365 Apps running on Windows 10 will stop receiving new features and Copilot support, while security updates will continue for a limited time.

Feature Updates End With Version 2608

Microsoft says Windows 10 devices running Microsoft 365 Apps will continue receiving feature updates and eligible Copilot support until version 2608 is released. After that, devices will remain on version 2608 and receive only security updates.

Version 2608 is expected to roll out this month. Once it arrives, Windows 10 users should no longer expect new features for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Microsoft 365 applications.

Security Updates Continue Until 2028

Microsoft 365 Apps won’t immediately become unsupported after the feature-update cutoff. Devices will continue receiving security updates until October 10, 2028, provided customers have an active Office subscription.

After that date, both feature and security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will stop altogether.

OneDrive Gets Longer Support

Microsoft is also providing continued support for the OneDrive desktop app on Windows 10 22H2. Devices running that version will continue receiving OneDrive updates through October 10, 2028.

However, devices running older versions of Windows 10 will no longer receive updates for the OneDrive desktop application.

Microsoft Wants Windows 10 Users to Upgrade

Microsoft is unsurprisingly recommending that Windows 10 users upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible. The company warns that continuing to run Microsoft 365 Apps on an unsupported operating system can result in performance and reliability issues.

For Windows 10 users who aren’t ready to move to Windows 11, Microsoft 365 Apps will continue receiving security updates for several years, but the software will effectively be frozen at version 2608 after its release.
