Opening a downloaded code project is different from reading an ordinary document. A development workspace can contain task definitions, settings, and references to tools that execute programs.

Visual Studio Code’s Workspace Trust feature creates a useful pause between inspecting unfamiliar files and enabling the project’s development workflow.

The feature works best when the decision is based on the project’s origin and contents, rather than on the desire to remove a banner quickly.

Understand the purpose of Restricted Mode

VS Code documents Restricted Mode as a way to limit automatic execution associated with an unfamiliar workspace. Features including tasks, debugging, some settings, and extensions can be disabled or restricted while ordinary source editing remains available.

This makes inspection possible before full activation.

For a sample project, begin by reading its documentation and examining the files that define how it builds or runs. Confirm that the downloaded material came from the intended publisher or repository.

A familiar project name alone is insufficient evidence if the download came through an unexpected link.

Review what the project asks the editor to do

Pay attention to workspace configuration and task definitions, especially where they invoke programs or scripts.

Ask straightforward questions: What command will run? Which file supplies it? Does it match the project’s documented workflow?

For a hypothetical demonstration repository, a task that builds a local example should have an understandable connection to that example.

If the instructions ask for broad system changes before explaining the project, investigate before continuing.

The goal is not to prove every line harmless through a quick glance. It is to make a deliberate trust decision with a clear understanding of the expected actions.

Keep extension trust separate

Workspace Trust does not make every installed extension safe.

VS Code’s extension security documentation explains that extensions run through an extension host with the same permissions as VS Code. They can perform actions including reading and writing files, making network requests, and starting external processes.

Consequently, a project’s recommended extension list deserves its own review.

Check the publisher and the reason the extension is needed. Avoid installing a large collection merely because a workspace suggests it.

For a small example, determine whether the built-in editor features are enough for inspection before adding anything.

Choose the narrowest practical trusted location

VS Code allows trust to be applied to a folder, including its subfolders.

That has an organizational consequence: a broad trusted parent can unintentionally include future projects placed beneath it.

A practical arrangement keeps reviewed projects separate from unfamiliar downloads. Trust can then follow a deliberate folder choice rather than every item that arrives in a general-purpose directory.

Periodically review trusted locations, particularly after reorganizing a development machine.

The meaning of a folder can change even when its path stays the same.

Make the decision reproducible

For team onboarding, document where the project comes from, which tools it requires, and which commands are expected during setup.

A new contributor should be able to compare the workspace with that description.

If a feature is unavailable in Restricted Mode, first identify why the project needs it. Then decide whether the workspace is ready to be trusted.

Workspace Trust is most useful as part of an understandable workflow: inspect the source, review execution paths, evaluate extensions separately, and enable the tools when their purpose and origin are clear.
