One website may feel comfortable to read while another looks unusually small. Changing the computer’s entire display configuration can solve the immediate problem but make other applications less convenient.

Firefox offers several more targeted controls: page zoom, text-only zoom, default zoom, and minimum font size. They affect different aspects of the reading experience, so choosing the right one starts with identifying what is difficult to see.

Use page zoom for a single website

Mozilla documents zoom controls in the Firefox menu and keyboard shortcuts using Ctrl on Windows or Linux, or Command on macOS. The plus and minus controls adjust zoom, while the reset control returns it to the default level.

Firefox remembers zoom by hostname. A setting for one hostname can therefore persist across visits without applying identically to a different hostname.

This is useful when a particular site consistently feels too small.

Before diagnosing a website as broken, inspect its current zoom level. An accidental keyboard shortcut can produce a change that remains after the browser is restarted.

Distinguish text size from the whole page

Text-only zoom changes text without enlarging images in the same way as ordinary page zoom. A default zoom preference can establish a broader starting point, while individual site settings can still differ.

A minimum font size serves another purpose: it prevents text from being rendered below the chosen threshold. Mozilla also documents separate font and color preferences.

These options should be tested separately. Enabling several at once makes it harder to understand why a page changed.

If the problem is a small diagram as well as small text, text-only zoom may not address the complete task. If only paragraph text needs help, enlarging every image may consume unnecessary space.

Test with a real reading session

Choose a representative article, a form, and a page with a dense navigation menu. Read and interact with each after making a change.

Check whether headings remain understandable, buttons remain reachable, and long lines are comfortable to follow. A setting that looks good on the opening paragraph may be less convenient farther down the page.

For example, a researcher may prefer ordinary page zoom for a technical article containing charts, then a different site-specific level for a dashboard.

Avoid treating one percentage as universally correct. The appropriate setting depends on the page, window size, screen, and the reader’s needs.

Keep troubleshooting reversible

If a page becomes awkward after several adjustments, return one control to its earlier value and compare. Record the default zoom and any minimum font size you have changed.

When asking for help, mention the browser version, the affected site, and whether the issue occurs at the default zoom. This gives someone else a better starting point than a screenshot alone.

Also distinguish the browser’s content from its interface. Enlarging a web page does not necessarily solve difficulty reading every toolbar or operating-system menu.

A targeted adjustment can make everyday browsing more comfortable without disrupting the rest of the computer. The key is to choose the scope deliberately: one site, all web content, text only, or a minimum size.
