The Wall Street Journal reports that US authorities have launched investigations into whether TP-Link routers pose a threat to national security. With their widespread use—found in approximately 65 percent of US homes and small businesses—TP-Link devices are under scrutiny by the Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Justice, with a potential ban looming as early as next year.
TP-Link routers have been linked to cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents. A recent example is their involvement in a large-scale hacker attack on Microsoft’s Azure cloud service, reportedly tied to actors with connections to the Chinese government. Such incidents have raised alarm, particularly since TP-Link devices are used not only by consumers but also by US government entities, including the Department of Defense.
In response, TP-Link’s US distributor stated their commitment to cooperating with the government to showcase their adherence to security standards and their dedication to mitigating national security risks.
