Microsoft Brings OpenAI’s o1 Model to Copilot for Free
Microsoft is making advanced AI reasoning more accessible by integrating OpenAI’s o1 model directly into Copilot’s new “Think Deeper” feature—and at no cost. This move provides users with unlimited access to OpenAI’s powerful model without requiring an expensive subscription.
OpenAI originally released the o1 model in December, offering it through ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) and ChatGPT Plus ($20/month with limits). Now, Microsoft is offering free access through Copilot’s “Think Deeper” mode, which allows for more in-depth responses compared to standard Copilot replies. Users can enable this function via copilot.microsoft.com or the Copilot app on Windows by signing in with a Microsoft account.
The “Think Deeper” toggle activates a more analytical AI experience, excelling at research, problem analysis, and even code generation. It can generate complete C# source files for tasks like creating a maze-drawing Windows application, providing detailed step-by-step instructions. However, it isn’t a replacement for search engines, as its knowledge remains current up to October 2023.
Unlike OpenAI’s tiered subscriptions, Microsoft has not announced any plans to charge for Think Deeper, either through direct payments or a Microsoft 365 subscription model. This free offering may position Copilot as one of the most compelling AI assistants available today. However, with OpenAI already developing o3, featuring a more sophisticated reasoning system, the competition for AI dominance continues to evolve rapidly.
