Microsoft limits future updates to 365 apps on Windows 10

Microsoft is refining its approach to ending support for Windows 10 users, particularly those still using Microsoft 365 apps like Word and Excel. While the official end of support for Windows 10 remains October 14, 2025, Microsoft has clarified what that means for Microsoft 365: security updates will continue for three additional years, but feature updates will not.

Specifically, Microsoft says that the last version of Microsoft 365 apps to receive new features on Windows 10 will be Version 2608, scheduled for release in August 2026 for users on the Current Channel—this includes all individual and family accounts. After that, those apps will still function but will receive security updates only, through October 10, 2028.

In effect, Microsoft is telling users that staying on Windows 10 will mean missing out on any new feature developments—including major AI integrations and productivity tools currently being rolled out across Microsoft 365 on Windows 11. While the company isn’t disabling the apps, it’s clearly drawing a line between basic support and continued innovation.

This move further incentivizes Windows 10 users to upgrade, reinforcing Microsoft’s broader push toward Windows 11 as the long-term supported platform. For customers who rely on the newest Microsoft 365 features, sticking with Windows 10 may soon feel like falling behind.
