Google has announced a major update for Workspace users: full end-to-end encryption in Gmail is now available even when sending emails to recipients who don’t use Gmail. Previously, this level of encryption was limited to messages between Gmail accounts, but the update broadens privacy protections across different email providers.
End-to-end encryption ensures that the content of your email is encrypted by the Gmail client before it leaves your device, meaning only the intended recipient can decrypt and read it. Google notes that the subject line and recipient information remain unencrypted, but the body of the email is fully protected. When non-Gmail recipients receive these emails, they will see a notification that the message is encrypted and must authenticate before accessing the content.
The rollout began on September 30th for all users with Gmail client-side encryption access and may take up to 15 days for the feature to reach everyone. This move represents a significant step toward universal email privacy, even for cross-platform communications.
